Ryobi Oscillating Multi-tool

To learn more about designing around human factors, I redesigned a very flexible hand tool; the oscillating multi-tool. Because this project was started in tandem with the COVID-19 pandemic, prototyping materials and facilities were unfortunately inaccessible. However, this allowed me to place a larger emphasis on the Solidworks part of the project.

Overview

Based on initial user research, I found that the largest complaints with this product were the changing of the tool and the length of the tool preventing certain cuts.

After talking to many users, it seemed that DeWalt was generally the industry standard because of the pull spring mechanism for changing the tool despite the higher price point.

This reinforced that the ease of changing tools is a priority for users of this product.
